Sanctified And Set Apart

Sanctified: Hagiazo. Sanctify: Hagiazo. Saint: Hagios. All three words are related and refer to the same individuals. The plain teaching of the Bible is that sanctified means set apart for God.

Colossians 1:2: To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at Colosse: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul was not writing to dead individuals who had been voted into sainthood by mortal men. He was calling believers who were still alive and studying the Bible saints and faithful brethren. We become saints (set apart ones) by receiving Christ into our hearts. We are sanctified or if you prefer; saintified. Sadly and falsely, many believe that they can be Christians but have never been set apart by God.

What sets believers apart is having Christ in their hearts and studying the Bible. God sets them apart (sanctifies them) when they study the Bible. Receiving Jesus and the Bible are the two causes of sanctification (being set apart). In a sense we also sanctify ourselves by believing in Jesus, receiving Him and studying the Bible.

John 17:17: Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

Set apart individuals will live sanctified (separated) lives. They will come out from among the world and be separate.

2 Corinthians 6:14: Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? 15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? 16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, 18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

I trust that God has set you apart from the world and you are willingly cooperating with Him in that.

And, by the way, even objects and time can and should be sanctified (set apart) for God.

Exodus 19:23: And Moses said unto the LORD, The people cannot come up to mount Sinai: for thou chargedst us, saying, Set bounds about the mount, and sanctify it. 40:10: And thou shalt anoint the altar of the burnt offering, and all his vessels, and sanctify the altar: and it shall be an altar most holy. 11 And thou shalt anoint the laver and his foot, and sanctify it.
